good morning to you. >> people here are finding comfort in the president's promise to do something to stop further mass shooting. overwhelming sorrow reverberated from this newtown high school. packed full with people trying to make sense of the unimaginable. >> you keep asking, why? and there's no answer. no answer. >> reporter: this afternoon, families of some of the youngest victims will say good-bye. 6-year-old jack pinto and little noah pozner will be laid to rest. >> chase. jesse. james. god has called them all home. >> last night, president obama joined the grieving and promised their deaths would not be in

vain. we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them we must change. >> he gave us a lot of hope and knowing that there's something that's going to be done. >> reporter: police are trying to determine a motive. they say the shooter killed his mother and then broke into zook zook elementary school friday morning. >> it's going to take many, many man hours to attempt to draw this picture together, to put this puzzle together. >> without answers this community waits. >> it's just unimaginable. it's just horrible. >> reporter: hearts heavy as many question how to celebrate the christmas holiday just one week away. schools here do remained closed today. students who did not attend sandy hook will return to class tomorrow.

in newtown, connecticut, i'm danielle leigh. as just heard there will be two funerals today. jack pinto l be at 1:00. he was a junior wrestler and a fan of the new york giants. noah pozner, was the youngest victim, he was described as inquisitive. we're learning more about what happened on friday and the desperate efforts to are try to stay as many children as possible. justice correspondent pete williams has those details. >> reporter: the hour fig consequences begin friday morning when adam lanza takes hundreds of rounds of ammunition from his gun enthusiast mother and uses one of them to kill her, nancy lanza, shooting her several times. before leaving, he damages his computer. investigators are trying to

retrieve what was stored. before 9:30, he loads the guns and ammunition into his mother's car and drives to sandy hook elementary school. a place he knows from his childhood. >> he had a relationship to the school, had attended there, at least that's what i'm led to believe. but beyond that, we really don't know a whole lot. >> reporter: relatives said that his mother once volunteered there. he's carrying two handguns and a bushmaster ar-15 style rifle. the school's door is locked. so adam lanza blasts his way in with the rifle. the sound of the shots alarms principal dawn hochsprung and school psychologist who come running. immediately killed. he turns toward the first grade

classes. he heads to the classroom of substitute teacher lauren rousseau. from there, he heads to victoria society ya's classroom, she and six children are shot and killed but seven others hidden by their teacher in a closet are spared. rachel da savino are also killed. the horror is over in ten minutes. adam lanza shoots himself in the head as police storm in. >> the bushmaster was used in the school in its entirety. handgun was used to take his own life. the newtown shootings have start a conversation about safety at schools across the country and nbc's mark potter has that. >> police around the country will be on heightened alert on increased patrols. >> we're committed to ensuring the safety of our students and

i'm confident that parents should safe taking them in. >> reporter: in los angeles, police are ramping them their presence up to calm parents' fierce there school officials are providing counselor to support the students after yet another attack on innocent children. >> payback for the misery they have been through, they can go to the school and find our most precious members of society c congregated there. >> reporter: school's security plans are now being reviewed worldwide. >> to make sure the schools in connecticut are safe. >> reporter: an argument on sunday talk shows was just how far to go to protect students at school. >> randi weingarden is

air is going to move in any time soon. new england, most of this system is going to produce rainfall, tomorrow morning, rain is going to push as far north as central and northern new england. this stalled front will continue to sit and give us that heavier rain tomorrow and finally it will start to improve. we have an icing situation here you see across portions of southern massachusetts, falling as mostly snow in new hampshire. because of this, we have winter storm advisories and warnings across portions of new england. picking up as much 6 to 12 inches of snow, just because that's where the coldest of the air is locked in, where we're seeing this lighter shade of gray across southerning new england, it will start as snow tomorrow morning. and then change over to rain. then, down around southern new england, again just rain out of this event.

president obama has spoken at memorial shootings in tucson, aurora and ft. hood, but his comments at sandy hook. >> this is the fourth time that we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by mass shootings. fourth time we have hugged survivors. the fourth time we have consoled

the families of victims. and in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country almost daily reports of victims, many of them children, in small town and big cities all across america. victims whose much of the time, their only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. in the coming weeks i'll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement to mental health professionals, to parents and educators. in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. because what choice do we have? we can't accept events like this as routine. are we really prepared to say that we're powerless?

in the face of such carnage. that the politics are too hard. are we prepared to say such violence visited upon on children year after year is somehow the price of our freedom? with the tragedy in connecticut has put the spotlight on mental health in this country. one mother whose far away from connecticut wrote about the issue that touches her own son. >> my name is liza long, i'm the mother of a mentally ill son. i'm calling my son michael, that's not his real name, he's 13 years old, he's bright, he loves harry potter, he is working on a novel. but when he gets angry, he frightens me. i first learned about the connect cut school shooting at work on my facebook feed.

welcome back. some other stories making news this morning -- police in san antonio investigating a shooting by a movie theater last night. one man was shot and rushed to the hospital. there may be movement in the talks to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff as house speaker john boehner is reportedly $1 trillion in higher taxes on people making more than $1 million in exchange president obama would have to agree to $1 trillion in spending cuts in afghanistan, an official says what may have been a land mine killed ten young girls as they were gathering firewood, two other girls were seriously wounded and hospitalized in critical condition. hillary clinton is recovering at home after from a concussion after she fainted. she won't testify before congress this week about the

attack that killed four americans in the u.s. mission in benghazi, libya. kate made her first appearance since being hospitalized for pregnancy sickness. wall streets begin the final full week of trading with the tragedy in mind. along with a renewed push for tighter gun control legislation. several police departments are across the country like this one in maryland held gun buybacks over the weekend. trading firearms and ammunition for cash. elsewhere the u.s. postal service said today will be the busiest day of the year for mailing christmas cards. meanwhile fed ex is expected to report a slip in profits. also ahead this week,

earnings from walgreens and nike. a record at the weekend box office. the hobbit an unexpected journey earned nearly $85 million nationwide. the biggest december opening of all-time. now, for another look at the weather here's nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer. i can't remember the last time i have seen a movie. >> i have seen skyfall, the last movie that i have been to, it's hard to find time to get back to the movies. hard to believe that we're in december and not really seeing a whole lot of cold air across the east coast, temperatures are starting off the day in the 40s and 50s. everything falling on the east coast is in the form of rain. the cold air is locked back in the montana into minneapolis, denver, where we're seeing temperatures in the 20s. minneapolis will top at in the mid-20s this afternoon. you can see the rain across the eastern seaboard.

turning now to sports, nfl honored the victims of the connecticut school shootings. several teams wore decals for sandy hook elementary school on their helmets. a moment of silence was observed in stadiums across the country. on sunday night football, trailing 31-3, the patriots made a stunning comeback to tie the game, but the niners took the lead right back on a touchdown pass. san francisco went on to beat new england, 41-34. atlanta quarterback matt ryan connected on three touchdown passes as falcons

handed new york giants their first regular-season shutout. green bay captured their second afc title over their arch rivals chicago bears and the houston texans are nfc south champions. with a win over the indianapolis colts. saturday night live changed the format of its opening this week in order to pay tribute of the victims of the sandy hook elementary school. instead of a comedy sketch, a children's choir led it with a rendition of "silent night." ♪ so tender and mild ♪ sleep in heavily peace ♪ sleep in heavenly peace #.

president's visit to the heartbroken town. 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 are no longer with their families and friends. that also robbed the lives of teachers, school principal and the shooter's own mother. yesterday president obama arrived in connecticut to console survivors. after mourning privately with victims' families and first responders. the president took a stage to deliver san emotional speech. followed by an unexpected call for action. >> this is our first task. caring for our children. it's our first job. if we don't get that right, we don't get anything right. that's how as a society we will be judged. and by that
